Putting those calendar things in here makes the events only viewable to those who can see this section. No events show up at all for anyone else.

I tried making a "calendar" forum that wouldn't be visible on the forum by admins, mods, or members unless they were directed to it from the actual calendar event, but it won't allow that.

I know, I tried to do thaat also to no avail, so, I made a separate forum for calendar. I see by doing that it can be viewed by a member or guest in the portal and also by clicking the calendar at the top next to Portal. Its the best I could do, I really don't like it that each time a date is added that it shows in the new posts scrolling in the portal, but, its better then nothing. scratch
